I need help creating a thesis and an outline on Exceptionality: Specific Learning Disability. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide. An abstract is required. Specific learning disability due: Specific learning disability Learning disability refers to different types of learning problems. It affects some learning skills which include: reading, solving maths problems, reasoning or writing (Center for Parent Information and Resources, (n.d.).

IDEA is a federal statute that ensures every student with a disability accesses free appropriate public education to meet their unique needs. The Act was put forth after the realization the educational needs of children with disabilities were not fulfilled. Special learning disability is covered under the IDEA.

IDEA defines special learning disability as “disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using or written or spoken” (U.S. Department of Education, (n.d.).

Examples of differences that affect learning

Learning activities can be affected by cultural differences. Cultural differences are ways that different cultural groups use to communicate, ways of living, mode of dressing, and ways of relating to different age groups. Student from various cultures learns different ways of communicating with the adults. Communication is very important in a classroom. The teacher should constantly be communicating with the students.

In some cultures, the young people are not supposed to make eye contact with the older people. For an instant, a Latino boy cannot make an eye contact with a female teacher. That is a way of showing respect for the Latin American culture. If the teacher does understand this, she might interpret it as being demotivated or disrespectful (Turnbull, A. P., Turnbull, H. R., Wehmeyer, & Shogren, 2013).

Examples of educational supports

Educational supports are helpful when it comes to helping students with learning disabilities improve their academic performance.

An example of the educational strategy that has been successful when used in students with specific learning disability is the reading program. Some students have a problem with reading started a reading program for the students with reading problems.

The reading program was running for 30minutes every week to enhance the reading skills of the students. After some time, the students with reading problems were seen to be more confident while reading before the class (Turnbull et al., 2013).

Use of OTRs has been proven to be successful while dealing with students with learning disabilities. This intervention involves the teacher asking questions that require a quick response and are easy to answer. This makes students gain more confidence in class (Marzano, R. J., Marzano, J. S., & Pickering 2003).

Early Intervention

There are no specific sign to show child is suffering from learning disabilities. That is why the teachers and parents should pay close attention to the children. Most children start to portray learning disabilities at elementary school level. Some of the indicators include: having trouble in spelling, difficulties in expressing ideas in writing, having many mistakes when reading out aloud (Center for Parent Information and Resources. (n.d.).

Early intervention for children with specific learning disabilities is a good way of responding to the disorder.

When a teacher or a parent notices, the child is having problems in some areas he/she should try to deal with it.

Early intervention helps them deal with the situation before it gets out of hand. Early intervention is less expensive than dealing with the problem when the child is much older (Wong, Graham, Hoskyn, & Berman 2008).

Transition services

NASET Transition Services is not applicable in this exceptionality because it begins at the age of 21years. The transition process starts at the age of 14 years.

Adult Independence and/or Support Services

The adult independent and support services will not be discussed in this paper because the exceptionality deals with children up to the adolescent age.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the specific learning disability is a disability that is correctable. The parents and the teacher need to identify it early enough. These special children need support from both parents/guardians and teachers so as to cope with the disorder. Educational supports are very effective in dealing with these disabilities. The parties involved in correcting the disorder should be patient with the children. Positive behaviour supports, helps to correct the learning disabilities when detected early. Teachers should pay attention in classroom so as to know the type of intervention to different students. The interventions help to correct behaviors and also improve academic performance. The government has put in measures to cater for the children with these special needs.
