I need to post a discussion comment on one of my classmate. I need at least a 75 word comment on the discussion below.
Social Contract Theory
Phillip
I would describe The Social Contract Theory as adapted ethics a group has created for themselves. (Pearson, 2015) .This does not necessarily mean that one group is better or possesses a superior set of governing beliefs than other group. Instead the group has adapted a moral contract that fits and or benefits the group. (Pearson, 2015). In most organizations there are opportunities for upper mobility as people promote or retire out of their current positions. However, not every company chooses replacements based on the same set of ethical beliefs. For example some companies will promote somebody based on their seniority at the company. Whereas another company will promote an individual based on their potential to function at an executive leadership level. As stated earlier neither is wrong. The organizational accepted norm for each company values merit over seniority and vice versa.
In certain cultures polygamy is a cultural norm that is not only accepted but expected of men. For more reserve cultures this can be seen as morally wrong, because of the cultural upbringing and ideals.
SCT in my opinion is an effective tool when dealing with issues related to business ethics. If a company creates work-environment norms they have in essence created Social Contract. For example if a company encourages two hour lunches to allow for exercise, shower, sustenance and then getting promptly back to work an SCT was created. While this has potential for abuse it also creates an environment where employee peers frown upon those that do not partake in the activity and or report back to work late.
