FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Criteria for Success: You will begin work on your group project this week as you:

• Identify a goal.
• Establish the members of your group.
• Define the roles and responsibilities of each group member.

You will work toward your goal over the next two weeks and reflect on the collaborative strategies used in your final assessment document during Week 6.

What you need to complete this assignment:To complete this assignment, you will need the following resources:

• Week 4 Assignment 2 Overview 

Steps to Complete: In Week 4, complete and submit your assignment in BlackBoard using the following steps:

STEP 1: Identify a common measurable goal. This can be a goal you are already working on at work, at school, or at home. You should be able to accomplish this goal within two weeks (or a sub-goal if you are working on a longer-term goal) during Weeks 4 and 5 of this course.

Here are some examples of common goals you may decide to work on:

• Organizing a room in a home or apartment.
• Cooking a new dish or elaborate meal.
• Creating an art project (e.g., mural, sculpture, drawing, etc.).
• Putting together a crowdfunding idea.
• A project at work you have to complete.
• A virtual party or get together.
• Planning a safe social event.
• A health or fitness goal.
• A plan for staying connected with someone.
• An environmental clean-up project in your community.3
• Volunteer efforts such as a book drive, food drive, etc.

STEP 2: Identify the other 2–4 members of your group and how you will work together. You may work with family members, friends, classmates, co-workers, or anyone else you will be able to collaborate with during this time period. Collaboration can be accomplished in-person, on the phone, through a virtual meeting space like Zoom, or through other collaborative tools like Google Docs. Make a plan for how your team will collaborate and what each person’s role and responsibilities will be.

STEP 3: Download the Group Project Plan Document and complete all sections.

Part 2

In Week 4, you created your Group Project Plan and began working on your common goal. This week, you’ll analyze and reflect on the collaborative process.

Criteria for Success: In this assignment, you will:

• Provide clear and comprehensive documentation of the common goal the team has completed.
• Describe team process, including each person’s role and responsibilities and how these were established.
• Identify collaborative tools (or potential tools used) and explain how they supported (or would support) work towards a common goal, with specific examples.
• Describe 2–3 effective collaborative approaches and how they were used by the group to accomplish the team’s goal, including concrete examples.
• Describe challenges and opportunities for improvement in collaborative teamwork, including specific examples.

What to submit/deliverables: A completed Reflection on Collaborative Strategies in Meeting a Common Goal.

What is the value of doing this assignment? This assignment gives you the opportunity to practice your relationship building skill, further developing your interpersonal interactions and collaboration techniques. It will show that you can collaborate with others to resolve a problem and work toward a common goal.

Almost every job application lists communication as a requirement. We’ve all had experiences—whether on the playground, over text, or in a parent-teacher conference—where we know we could have communicated more clearly and effectively. This assignment asks you to use what you’ve learned in the course about interpersonal interaction, collaborating in small groups, and responding in the workplace to complete a common goal and reflect on the collaborative approaches used. Worried about where to start? The good news is that you’ve already established a foundation with these skills by reading Chapters 2, 5, and 20 in The Art of Public Speaking. You will use what you learned in those chapters to help you complete this assignment.
