THE STREET HOME

Category: Literature

Missing a proper home for one, is the worst thing that can happen to an individual. The people living in the streets in the United States of American according to Annopa article are estimated at 2.5 million in this 21st century. These people call the streets their home. You can imagine the type of life that they lead given that there are horrible conditions on the streets. They are faced with a number of difficulties including lack of shelter, proper meals and adorable luxury associated with home. These poor living conditions force these people to venture into social crimes such as drug trafficking and abuse, thuggery, and theft among other anti-social mannerisms. Drug use and abuse is one of the most prevalent issues among these street people. In this exercise, I focus my research on how drugs affect the homeless people on the streets; reasons as to why they abuse these drugs? What are consequences and possible solutions to this menace in big cities around the world?

Life on the streets is the most difficult thing on earth. These young ones live in such conditions that drug use and abuse becomes the order of the day.  “The horrible conditions on the streets are the main cause for drug use among homeless children,” writes Masemouh in his works, Drug Use among Street Children in Tehran, Iran (masemouh, 2). There was this day that I came quite early from one of my evening parties. There was this street boy in the Californian streets asking for a few coins from me. This was around ten at night. Having been such a young boy, close to seven years, I grew a deep interest in him. After a 30 minute talk with him, I realized his mother is a careless bar tender. The young boy knows that his mother is careless and cannot fend for his needs. He is therefore on the streets begging to get a meal and a living from the same. He told me quite a number of things. He says they use the drugs to make them forget of their daily hurdles. For instance, he sleeps on the floor. Once he gets drunk, he will be able to forget that the floor is cold. You can imagine of such a scenario. This story is common to most of these young ones on the streets; they are on the streets, not by choice but by default. They use drugs because they have no other option.
