WCUI Human Brain Discussion

Category: Nursing

Description

Consider the following facts about the human brain:

  • The adult brain uses 20% of the body’s energy but accounts for only about 2% of the body’s total weight (averaging around 3 pounds).
  • When a person is awake, his or her brain generates 25 watts of power; this is enough to power a lightbulb.
  • The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, while the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. Relate this to a stroke on the right side of the brain. Ask students what could be affected on the left side of the body.
  • The average human brain contains 100 billion neurons; the rate of neuron growth during development of a fetus is 250,000 neurons per minute. This is a good opportunity to bring up the effects of alcohol on the developing fetus (fetal alcohol syndrome).
  • There are more neurons in the human brain than there are stars in the Milky Way.

What you know about the brain? What are two facts that you know that are not listed?

Share knowledge and personal or family experiences about the brain’s structure and function, as well as diseases and disorders related to the brain.
