Indian popular cinema is both a reaction to India’s
globalization and a driver of it. For this assignment, you will
watch a film from Bollywood’s “third phase,” though it will also be
a film that has some aspirations toward “the real.” On one of the
three films below, write a 5-7 page double-spaced paper on how the
film expresses both Indian and global desires. These could be the
desires of the characters, the desires of the film industry, or the
desires of the nation. Consider such topics as melodrama, realism,
music, and family, as discussed in the lectures. The paper must be
argumentative. It should be clear the point you are arguing, and
what is the evidence from the film you are providing to back up
that argument. You should be detailed about characters, narrative,
music, or whatever specific elements of the film best support your
argument. This is not a film review. Your opinion of the film is
not important here. You must write on one of these three films:
Gully Boy (Zoya Akhtar, India, 2019) (Amazon Prime) Kapoor &
Sons (Shakun Batra, India, 2016) (Netflix and Amazon Prime, as well
as for rent on iTunes, Google Play) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
(Shelly Chopra Dhar, India, 2019) (Netflix)
