In “The Open Boat,” the crew consists of the captain, the correspondent, the cook, and the oiler (Billie). The captain is in charge, the oiler is hardworking and confident, the cook is positive (yet a weak man), and the correspondent is the “eyes” of the story. Each man has a part to play in his own survival. Choose one of the characters and explain how he survives (or tries to) and connect to a personal example of when you, or someone you know, had to “survive” something in life. It could be a physical challenge, a work conflict, or an emotional difficult. How did you (or the other person) find a way to “survive”?
