Compare this film’s depiction of a viral outbreak to that depicted in Contagion.
Explaining his reasons for making this movie, Brad Pitt said: “what would the effect on the world be if everything we knew was upside-down and pulled out from under us?” In this sense, what parallels can be drawn between World War Z and the COVID-19 pandemic?
Zombie films like 28 Days Later, Zombieland, and I Am Legend and the TV series The Walking Dead have been extremely popular in the 21st Century. Made for a cost of around $250 million, World War Z was one of the bigger budget entries in this genre during that time period. It went on to make $540 million. Why do you think zombie films have been so popular? And why might they have a resurgence of popularity in light of the COVID-19 pandemic?
Max Brooks, author of the novel on which the film is based, stated:
The zombies scare me more than any other fictional creature out there because they break all the rules . . . . Zombies don’t act like a predator; they act like a virus, and that is the core of my terror. A predator is intelligent by nature, and knows not to over-hunt its feeding ground. A virus will just continue to spread, infect and consume, no matter what happens.
How does the film convey this?
“For all its effectiveness at portraying the horror of possible human extinction, the film’s actual humans are so soulless that this could just as well be the movie version of the video game Plants vs. Zombies.” Argue for or against this statement. https://digitalcampus-swankmp-net.eu1.proxy.openat…
