I have chosen to analyze the poems “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, “The Thing in the Forest” by A. S. Byatt, and “A Wall of Fire Rising” by Edwidge Danticat. Each one of these poems uses symbolism in some sort of way. For example, the birthmark in “The Birthmark”, the forest in “The Thing in the Forest”, and the hot air balloon in “A Wall of Fire Rising”. In some way all of these symbols represent freedom and the desire of being perfect.
In my essay I want to analyze the ways that poets use different symbols with similar meanings in may different poems. I will also look at the themes of each poem and compare the three themes to one another. I would like to show how each poet is unique in using symbolism in their writings while making an impactful statement through these symbol.
