I’m working on a film question and need support to help me understand better.
This is the prompt I have attached the readings, lecture notes and will attach the class recordings that will help you answer this prompt 🙂
Prompt: Rudolf Arnheim wrote that film resembles all other arts in that it is a “medium that may, but need not, be used to produce artistic results.” Consider why he felt the need to introduce his essay with this statement in 1933, and then, how it is that an artist goes about creating cinematic art. Choose a relevant film from the course Moodle site to make your answer specific.
READ: Arnheim, Rudolph, “Film and Reality” (1933) 279-89
Balázs, Béla, From The Theory of the Film (1945) 125-35
SCREEN: BERLIN: SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITY (Walther Ruttmann, 1927, 79m), The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1927, 114m)
You can use Berlin or The Passion of Joan of Arc to answer this question and the readings these are the only resources that you should use no outside resources should be used (you can find these films on Youtube for free or other online platforms for free).
