Oppositional filmmaking help to create a different alternative for cinema. This alternative of storytelling was from a different perspective to that of a white, male director. Oppositional films such as “Within our Gates” was directed by Oscar Micheaux, the first African American film director. This type of films were important because it offered a different way of portraying a minority group such as the African American community from an internal perspective.
