Acknowledgement Letter
The New York Times article, “How the Criterion Crops Out African-American Directors,” notes that out of 1,034 films, Criterion only has four (4) by Black directors. You want to make a case to Criterion why a Project One film should be included in their collection. Use a concept or two provided by Davis, Taylor, Guerrero, or Field to assist your analysis. Analyze one or two scenes to prove your point. Do not simply repeat back the scene analysis provided by Allyson Nadia Field. Address your essay to Criterion’s president Peter Becker, not me. In other words, make a case to Becker why your film is important to bring a richer representation of Black experiences/aesthetics to the screen. Re-read the Times article to familiarize yourself with some of Becker’s and various Black directors’ responses.
