1. What does USGS stand for?
2. Use the search function on the home page to find these facts about the New Madrid fault system. a. What region is it located within?
b. What major cities could be impacted if there is a temblor on this fault
c. Name the States that have segments of the fault within their borders.
d. What is the largest event recorded on this system? Magnitude? Intensity?
e. What is the outlook for a major slip on this fault in the future?
3. Find the 3 most recent large (5.1 or greater) earthquakes in: 1. The World. Provide:
The Date, Degrees Latitude, Degrees Longitude, focus depth, magnitude and location name. Extra credit if you can name the fault zone.
Lab 5 Instructions: Go to: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov you may use the map on the home page or go to the Alaska Observatory at the bottom of the page to find the information you need for completion of the following. You will see an active map.
a. Provide the Name, Latitude, Longitude and current warning status for any volcano on this map that is at yellow alert or higher.
b. Provide a brief synopsis of what each alert state indicates about the state of the volcano.
c. Find Mount Redoubt and provide the Latitude, Longitude, and the name of the volcano located south of Redoubt.
d. Briefly explain Aleutian Volcanism-(e.g.) why are there volcanoes here and what type of volcanoes are they.
