Robert Hayden recovers what had been lost of the African Americans by showing us viewpoints of different African Americans of their voyage of slave traders by bringing the slaves across the Atlantic Ocean. Ones viewpoint in the Middle Passage is an African American saying that “Some of the slaves would try to starve themselves. Lost three this morning leaped with crazy laughter to the crazy sharks, sang as they went under.”(Hayden, 1962/2013, p.2372). Also in the Middle Passage “That crew and Captain lusted with them comeliest of the savage girls kept naked in the cabins.”(Hayden, 1962/2013, p.2373).

Robert Hayden brings to life what happened back in that time and its very striking to me reading it because its sad to think what the slaves went through. Hayden Hayden uncovers a lady who is a singer and sings “Because there was there was a man somewhere in a candy stripe silk shirt, grackle and dangerous as a jaguar and because a women moaned for him.”(Hayden, 1962/2013, p.2377). Writing that she was aggravated with what she was doing is not real love that she’s showing by singing and dancing, but careless love. She got up and sang “because were those feared alarming fist of snow on the door and those who feared the not squared of statistics.”(Hayden, 1962/2013, p.2377).

To conclude how Robert Hayden recovers has been lost of the African American experience is in Those Winter Sundays he recovers a boy talking about his father and how every Sunday morning his father would get up out of bed and had a routine which was lighting all the rooms. “I’d wake up and heat the cold splintering, breaking. When the rooms were warm, he’d call, and slowly I would rise and dress.”(Hayden, 1962/2013, p.2377). The boy expresses there being chronic ager at the house as well. He didn’t know why his father did all of those things even polish his shoes. My guess why he did all of that is his father didn’t know much about love and how to express it. Hayden’s writings show us what the African Americans went through back in the day, how they were treated, and they just didn’t know how to show, like love.

Art Spiegelma demonstrates the depth and subtlety that we have come to expect of traditional navels and extended nonfictional texts by writing his own graphic novel “Maus“. Mr. Spiegelmans graphic novel Maus is in my opinion an excellent novel. My favorite novels are the graphic ones. This one though is nonfiction and about a man that tells his son Art about his days when he was younger meets a lady named Anja and says “My wife and I have been hiding in Sosnowiec for over a year.”(Spiegelman, 1986/2013, p.2741). They hide out in a small barn on Kawkas farm. Vladec eventually leaves to go to Deketa.

On the bus he gets on with the Germans he talks about “The Germans paid no attention to me… In the Polish car they could smell if a Polish Jew came in.”(Spiegelman, 1986/2013, p.2743). The two eventually get back together and stay in a cellar where there are lots of rats, but they were happy because it could have been worse. They could be with Gestapo. The condition they were in now was a lot better that what it could have been. The mothers would tell their children “Be careful, a Jew will catch you to a bag and eat you.”(Spiegelman, 1986/2013, p.2752). They finally get out of all that and leave.

To conclude how Art Spiegelman demonstrates the depth and subtlety that we have come to expect of traditional novels and extended nonfictional texts is Art uses the characters in the novel as pigs. His writing also has some humor in it also, but mostly has you seeing what they went through back during the holocaust. He really opens your eyes on how they treat’s the Jews and how they had to hide out of being taken by the Nazis.
