On the 8th of October 1957, the Windscale Nuclear Power Plant and plutonium production facility (United Kingdom) heating of the reactor number 1 got out of control resulting in rapture of uranium cartridges nearby. The released uranium oxidised and started a fire. This released iodine 131 into the environment resulting in government banning consumption of dairy products within 500 square kilometres around the plant.
