Before you begin crafting your discussion response for this week, be sure to read required materials and watch Episode Three of the Designing Healthy Communities PBS miniseries. These episodes are designed to work with the readings to give you a broad understanding of the topics that we discuss in class.
In your readings for this week, the case studies focused on cities built on transportation. Oakland is one of the largest seaports in the United States and Detroit certainly has been an important hub of the automobile industry. Like it or not, the culture of the United States is automobile-centric. Many of us live more than a mile from the nearest business of any sort. This means that we do not typically walk to shops, to work, or to school. Some communities have increased bicycle traffic in their communities, while others have created natural spaces where extraneous exercise can occur.
This week, after watching the videos below, evaluate your neighborhood using the checklist at HFW-Walkability-Checklist.pdf. (If you have trouble accessing these videos, email your instructor for an alternative.)
Attach your finished checklist.
Now, post a discussion about your community’s walkability, using the following list of questions as a guide.
