An infection occurs when another organism enters your body and causes disease. The organisms that cause infections are very diverse and can include things like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. (Healthline, 2021). An infection can be acquired in various ways, with so many different causes. Some of the most common causes of infections are passed directly from a person with an infection, via contaminated food or water, and even though the bite of an insect.
One of the possible causes of an increased infection rate is related to healthcare and hospital settings. According to the CDC each year, about 1 in 25 U.S. hospital patients is diagnosed with at least one infection related to hospital care alone; additional infections occur in other healthcare settings. (CDC, 2017).
Every year, many lives are lost due to the spread of infections in hospitals. Healthcare professionals can take the following steps to prevent or decrease infections: (Medline Plus, 2018).
Additionally, one of the most common causes of infections is the lack of something as simple as proper handwashing. Regular handwashing is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others.
