Supply chain management plays a very important role in the marketing of any product as it involves the management of the flow of goods and services from raw materials to the final products. Distorted information at any point in the supply chain management will tremendously affect both the manufacturer and the consumer.
The e-beer supply chain simulator that we worked on at residency gave me a very good understanding of coordination throughout the supply chain. Our team members played different roles in the supply chain, like Suppliers, Manufacturers, Salespeople, and Customers. Each of our groups controls only one part of the supply chain but the supply chain is influenced by each group’s decision of ordering too much or too little. As each group is influenced by the decisions made by other groups, any lack of coordination will result in a shortage of products or overstocks of products, which is referred to as the Bullwhip effect. The term Bullwhip effect was first coined by Procter & Gamble when they experienced erratic fluctuations in the order patterns of Pampers baby diapers, where the fluctuations were greater at the top level of the supply chain like distributer orders and orders of supply materials but the rate of consumption of baby diapers was steady. This effect also is known as the Whiplash or Whipsaw effect.
In the e-beer supply chain simulator that we worked on at residency, our team did experience the Bullwhip effect. I was part of the Salespeople group, and our group took decisions based on the customer need. The supply chain process was smooth until we receive more product demand from customers. Based on the need, we ordered more goods from the manufacturer but as the manufacturing takes time, we saw a shortage of goods.
Bullwhip effect stresses on not depending completely on distorted demand signals but also understand those signals and avoid mislead by them. Increased transparency in supply chain management will help counter the Bullwhip effect.
