Yale New Haven Hospital is part of Yale New Haven Health Group, this hospital is located in New Haven Connecticut, according to their website https://www.ynhh.org/about/hospital-overview their mission is to be committed to innovation and  excellence in patient care, teaching, research and services to their community . One of Yale core values is centered in the community and to be accessible to everyone regardless of gender, race, or country or origin, to accomplish this, one of the objectives of Yale New Haven Hospital is to promote diversity on their workforce.

In 2018 from 3,572,665 residents in Connecticut, 16.5 % were Hispanics, 12% were African Americans and 4.9% were Asian with 30.4% Hispanics and 33% African American resided in New Haven (Census Bureau, 2018). Because of this diversity is extremely important for Yale Hospital to have staff that can effectively interact and understand the diverse needs and concerns of their community of patients. To accomplish a diverse work force Yale must have strong equal opportunity and nondiscriminatory regulation in place, in addition having career fairs in places that have a diverse pool of individual such as schools with a diverse study body and developed partnerships with multicultural associations will improve the recruiting efforts. Finally, metrics will be developed to track those recruiting efforts.

Another objective that is essential for the success of the organization is for Yale New Haven Hospital to keep expanding by adding more corporate members, network participants and clinical affiliates, this is even more important now that Yale is facing growing competition by Harford Healthcare Medical Group. To improve the odds of adding new members, Yale New Haven Health Group will increase the benefits to network participants and clinical affiliates by allowing more participation on contracts negotiation on behalf of their physicians.

Norton Healthcare, www.nortonhealthcare.org , is a system of hospitals, immediate care centers, physician practices, and oncology clinics. Its mission statement states simply, “Norton Healthcare’s purpose is to provide quality health care to all those we serve, in a manner that responds to the needs of our communities and honors our faith heritage” (Norton Healthcare, 2019). For this discussion, the focus will be one of the five hospitals in the system, Norton Audubon Hospital.

As of Spring, 2019, Norton Audubon Hospital currently has a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of “A” (The Leapfrog Group, 2019). For context, The Leapfrog Group is “a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system” (The Leapfrog Group, 2018) and the grade reflects outcome data for multiple patient safety criteria. While Audubon earned an “A”, a deeper dive into the scores shows there is room for improvement in the area of surgical site infections after colon surgery and communication to patients about medicines. These two issues contradict the Norton mission statement in that increased infection rates and decreased communication are the antithesis of quality health care. Two objectives which would improve these scores and would support the mission statement would be:

  1. Develop a better infection prevention strategy to decrease surgical infection rates in colon surgeries.
  2. Develop a strategy to effectively communicate medication information clearly and concisely to increase patient understanding.

These objectives are impactful to the organization in a variety of ways. Monetarily, federal reimbursement is increased when negative outcomes are decreased. A lower infection rate results in fewer penalties and increases overall profit. From a community standpoint, the more patients feel their needs are being met, the higher the likelihood they will solicit Norton Audubon. This also increases profit margin and that increased profit margin provides funding to enhance and add new services for the community, thus fulfilling the Norton mission statement of responding to the needs of the community.
