Research the priorities in the current publication of the National Quality Strategy. Select and discuss the one priority that you believe is the most important to healthcare today. What other industry can use this strategy?

This is an opportunity for you to explore the practical application of quality research in healthcare. I encourage you to respond in first person, share personal experiences, and ask questions to further develop your understanding of quality in healthcare.

The National Quality Strategy publication was created on behalf of the Department for Health and Human Services.  Input from numerous stakeholders were gathered to help identify the main concerns and issues of Americans of the healthcare industry.  As a result, the output was six priorities of which I will address one:  how to ensure that patients are engaged and partners in their own healthcare (AHRQ, 2017).   Just looking at the surface, one might believe that every person controls their own healthcare, but that is far from true.

In 2019, I worked with a healthsharing organization tasked with obtaining reduced costs for healthcare for members who did not have traditional health insurance.   My staff of representatives would contact the providers and negotiate reduced rates.  Not only did the patients assume that we were obtaining the same pricing that was available by insurance, but they didn’t understand why we had to negotiate at all.  They had no understanding of the cost of the services they used.   I think this kept them from participating in their own care or being aware of issues facing U.S. healthcare.

For example, one of the primary challenges facing U.S. healthcare is cost containment Several ways to reduce cost include price transparency and preventative medicine (Sadeghi, 2013).   Presently, U.S. hospitals are being asked to publish their price lists for services.  Healthcare professionals know that those ‘retail’ prices are not reflective of what is paid by contracted insurance providers, but the public at large fail to act as educated consumers – comparing prices and selecting high quality service providers.  Additionally, the average consumer goes to the doctor only after they are symptomatic.  Many don’t avoid bad behaviors (smoking, overeating, etc.) that may help them prevent chronic illness.

Every industry should exercise cost containment by focusing on quality processes and procedures.   Consider retail sales outlets who focus on anti-theft protocols or auto manufacturers who concentrate on minimizing parts errors in their cars.  American consumers have come to expect quality deliverables from retail products and cars.  It’s time they should expect the same from their healthcare providers.

Person-centered care, which views a person seeking care as an individual with unique needs and opinions rather than merely an ill patient, requires a strong partnership between the provider and the patient in which both sides share power and responsibility for clinical decision making and care management. Patient-Centered care as a key component in the delivery of quality health care in the United States. New care delivery models, including patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), aim to ensure that patient treatment is coordinated through a primary care physician so that all people receive whatever care they need, in a manner they understand, from a clinician they trust
