Introduction
Project management is a professional discipline with a body of knowledge, training track, and accredited certifications. Project managers are tasked with delivering expected benefits and value to their employers through effective planning, organization, and risk mitigation. They align expected results to an organization’s key initiatives. Health information management (HIM) and project management employ some of the same principles and skills. Project managers must have skills in relationship management, document management, and process acumen, which are all requirements of an HIM director. RHIAs know about compliance challenges, shifting regulatory demands, and how to implement good workflow management. All these skills are used in project management (Dimick, 2011).
As departmental and organizational changes are implemented, HIM professionals working in project management are responsible for working with stakeholders to ensure that initiatives are on task and on schedule. For this task, you will reference the attached “Fielder Community Hospital Scenario” to complete the attached “Business Case Template.” In this template, you will detail a process improvement project you will manage as the HIM Systems Director for Fielder Community Hospital. You will choose one of the following projects:
• transitioning from hybrid to fully digital EHR• merging five departments into one centralized department• moving from an in-office to a remote work environment
You will also discuss the project scope and how it will support organizational goals.
