Description

These are the instructions given to me

Ill give you the screenshots for the textbook after someone is assigned.

Part 1

Complete the following exercises from the textbook:

Exercise 3.2, #8 (p.71)

Exercise 3.4, I. #6 (p. 78)

Exercise 3.8, #3 (p. 92)

Exercise 3.9, #8 and #13 (p. 93)

Part 2

Research and Prepare

  1. Locate a non-scholarly source on a controversial topic (see list of topic options below, email me if you would like to use a different topic). Make sure that the source actually contains an argument!
    • Clarify the question and position related to the topic you will work on. If the general topic was ice cream, my focus could be “Should we eat ice cream for dinner?” and the source might argue that we should eat ice cream for dinner or that we should not eat ice cream for dinner.
    • The topic you use for this assignment will also be used for the Unit 4 Assignment, so be sure it is a topic for which you can locate scholarly sources as well. In other words, you probably should not actually write about whether or not to have ice cream for dinner. (Also keep in mind that you will need to find an argument on the opposing side for the Unit 4 assignment).

Diagram, Write, and Evaluate

  1. Diagram the argument. This will help you locate the conclusion and the premises that are intended to support the conclusion. Include a drawing, picture, or clear description of your diagram at the end of your paper.
  2. Introduce the topic, the two main positions in the debate, and precisely state the exact question regarding the issue you are working with. Please note, this is not a thesis-defense paper, so you should not state your own view on the issue or take a side in the debate.
  3. Introduce the source, identifying the author, the website or publication the source was found at, and any affiliations they may have. [Be sure to include a full citation on the reference page and a link to any web source].
  4. Present the argument from the non-scholarly source in premise-conclusion format. Note whether each premise is dependent or independent.
  5. Evaluate the argument. Is the argument inductive or deductive? Are the premises of the argument adequate to support the conclusion? Are there any issues you can detect within the reasoning? Use your diagram to help you explain. Be specific!
