Following the Prothero reading, Segran’s “The Rise of Islamic Feminism”, and our video lecture, what connections can you draw across the material?
Prothero writes that Islam is once again a western obsession. However, much of the information in mainstream media focuses on a very visible subset of people that claim to represent Islam. What about average Muslims in a variety of contexts raising families, going to work, educating and entertaining themselves while practicing Islam with varying degrees—what we might call “everyday” Islam? Discuss what would be useful to learn about “everyday” Islam that your classmates have not already posted? Use your readings to describe these areas of learning and explain why they might be helpful?
