The case memos should be double-spaced and must be no more than one page in length. The format for memos in this course is very specific. The first section should contain your recommendation. The second section should contain the three strongest reasons in favor of your recommendation. The third section should contain any reasons against your recommendation. In analyzing cases, there are several mistakes that are commonly made: One common mistake is to make recommendations (as well as other statements) that are far too general. The recommendations need to be as specific as possible. The more specific the recommendation, the easier it is to see both the advantages and, more importantly, the disadvantages. Platitudes simply occupy space in a memo and annoy the reader. A second common mistake is to lose sight of what you are trying to accomplish with the memo. The result is inclusion of extraneous sentences and sometimes even paragraphs. For each sentence, ask yourself what it contributes to the points you are trying to make. If it contributes nothing to your point, it is simply "filler" that takes up space. A third common mistake is making statements that are not supported by facts in the case or other evidence. Such unsupported assertions are often the vehicle by which your personal biases slip into the analysis. A fourth common mistake is to believe that these cases can be analyzed without manipulation of numeric data.
