At this point in the rebellion, do you think Katniss would agree with the Categorical Imperative? In this Imaginative Writing Assignment, you will use The Hunger Games to explore ethics and explain the concept of categorical imperatives to a class of seventh graders. (In other words, this assignment calls for you to break down this concept to ensure you understand it well enough to “teach” it to someone else.) See the prompt specifications below.
Prompt:
Imagine that you are explaining The Hunger Games and how it explores ethical questions to a class of 7th grade students. You have been asked to teach them about the Categorical Imperative and how you see Katniss’s thinking up to this point in The Hunger Games.
In this assignment, you will provide the script of your teaching segment. (The goal here is that you can explain this theory in simple terms and with concrete examples that would make sense to someone with an average vocabulary. In other words, they wouldn’t know the terms categorical or imperative. Can you find other ways to describe what this means? And, don’t forget to tell them about Kant and why he came up with this theory in the first place.)
In addition, make sure that as part of your evaluation of Katniss’s perspective, you provide a careful and detailed analysis using specific scenes from our reading for this unit.
